Tempest AA48108-2 Spin EZ Oil Filter

Tempest AA48108-2 is a short Spin EZ spin-on oil filter for aircraft piston engines, 111 × 95 mm with a 3/4-16 female thread. It has full-pleat cellulose media rated at 40 microns and a magnet, and Tempest lists it mainly for Continental engines. Tempest classifies it as interchangeable with the taller AA48109.

  • Short version, nominally 4 3/8 in high and 3 3/4 in in diameter (111 × 95 mm).

  • Resin-impregnated cellulose full-pleat media rated at 40 microns, with a magnet.

  • Burst strength above 600 psi, 50 % over ARP 1400.

  • Solid lubricant on the gasket, so no oil or DC4 compound is needed at installation.

  • Torque 16–18 ft-lb (22–24 N·m), or hand-tight plus a quarter turn.

  • Bypass valve meets the Continental (TCM) bypass specification of 12–14 psi.

The Spin EZ line is a spin-on oil filter for aircraft piston engines. Tempest builds the filter around resin-impregnated cellulose full-pleat media rated at 40 microns and fits a magnet, as in all its aviation oil filters.

The dash-two suffix denotes the filter height: this version is 4 3/8 in (111 mm) high at 3 3/4 in (95 mm) diameter.

Installation and seal

Tempest applies Spin EZ solid lubricant to the gasket, so the seal needs no oil, grease or DC4 compound. The stated torque is 16–18 ft-lb (22–24 N·m), or hand-tight plus a quarter turn.

Burst strength is above 600 psi, which Tempest puts at 50 % over ARP 1400. This unit has a 3/4-16 female thread.

Short and tall version

Tempest lists the AA48108-2 as interchangeable with the AA48109. A Letter of Engineering Concurrence from Aero Accessories to the FAA Atlanta ACO (2022) gives the same media and filtration performance and the same footprint.

The AA48109 is nominally 1-13/16 in (46 mm) taller and holds more contaminant; the AA48108-2 has less contaminant capacity.

The Tempest application guide lists the AA48108-2 mainly for Continental engines such as O-200, O-470, IO-520, IO-550, TSIO-520. Tempest gives the guide as reference only.
