Avidyne IFD440 FMS/GPS/NAV/COM

Avidyne IFD440 is a panel-mounted FMS/GPS/NAV/COM with a 4.8 in touchscreen and a 10 W VHF COM with 8.33 kHz spacing. The SBAS GPS supports LPV approaches, and the VHF NAV receiver covers VOR, localizer and glideslope. It is designed as a slide-in replacement for a GNS 430/430W and connects to an iPad over WiFi and Bluetooth.

  • 4.8 in touchscreen, 640 × 240 pixels, with dedicated knobs and buttons for use in turbulence.

  • SBAS GPS to TSO-C146d Class Gamma 3 for LPV, LP, LNAV/VNAV and LNAV approaches.

  • 10 W VHF COM (TSO-C169a) on 25 kHz and 8.33 kHz channels; 16 W is an option for 28 V installations.

  • WiFi and Bluetooth connect the unit to an iPad with the IFD 100 app and to the MK10 wireless keyboard.

  • 3D exocentric synthetic vision shows terrain, obstacles, airports and the flight plan overlay.

  • Supply 9–33 V DC, 2.34 kg, no cooling required.

Display and hybrid touch operation

Display and hybrid touch operation

The 4.8 in display has 640 × 240 pixels. In smooth air the unit is operated by touch; in turbulence it is operated by the dedicated knobs and buttons.

Flight plan changes are shown graphically in real time before they are accepted, and user-defined waypoints are created automatically.

3D synthetic vision

3D synthetic vision

The exocentric 3D view shows nearby terrain, obstacles, airports and the flight plan overlay, and complements the moving map.

TAWS-B is not available on IFD4XX fixed-wing units, so the unit provides no TAWS-B alerting.

GPS, NAV and COM

The GPS receiver meets TSO-C146d Class Gamma 3, with 16 channels (13 GPS, 3 GPS/WAAS/SBAS) and a 5 Hz update rate. The unit is approved for LPV, LNAV/VNAV, LP and LNAV approaches with an SBAS antenna. VOR, localizer and glideslope reception is built in.

The VHF COM transmits 10 W at 14 V and 28 V, or 16 W at 28 V where the option is fitted, on 25 kHz and 8.33 kHz channels.

WiFi, Bluetooth and the IFD 100 app

All IFD models can be configured for Bluetooth and WiFi in and out. The IFD440 connects to an iPad and to the MK10 wireless keyboard.

With the IFD 100 app, flight plans are created on the iPad and uploaded to the unit wirelessly.

Replacing a GNS 430/430W

Replacing a GNS 430/430W

The IFD440 is designed as a slide-in replacement for a GNS 430/430W: the existing tray and wiring may be reused. Some changes can be required, such as circuit breakers, power and ground wiring and TAWS audio, as the installation manual describes. Bezel size is 159 × 67 mm, depth 279 mm with connectors.

A tray (850-00184-000), an installation kit (820-00114-000) and a combined tray and kit (850-00184-002) are separate items.

Approval path and variants

EASA STC 10058132 covers the installation of IFD5XX and IFD4XX units. In an EASA aircraft the installation follows this STC for types on its approved model list, or another approved modification, and ends with a Certificate of Release to Service. The FAA STC SA00343BO applies to listed US Part 23 aircraft only and is not EU approval.

The two variants differ only in bezel colour: 850-00179-000 is black and 850-00179-100 is grey.
