Avidyne IFD550 is a panel-mounted FMS/GPS/NAV/COM with a 5.7 in touchscreen (640 × 480 pixels), a 10 W VHF COM transceiver and an internal attitude reference system (ARS). The SBAS GPS receiver (TSO-C146d, Class Gamma 3) provides guidance for LPV, LP, LNAV/VNAV and LNAV approaches; the VHF NAV receiver covers VOR, localizer and glideslope.

The ARS drives an attitude display and an ego-centric synthetic vision view; this attitude information may be used only as secondary, non-required information. The COM tunes 25 kHz and 8.33 kHz channels. Built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, ARINC 429 and RS-232 ports connect the unit to EFB apps and other avionics. TAWS-B (TSO-C151d) is a paid option. The four shop variants differ in bezel colour (black or grey) and in the RS-170 video input on 850-00182-021 and -121.

The IFD5XX is designed as a slide-in replacement for a GNS 530/530W: the existing tray and wiring may be reused, with changes described in the installation manual. The unit must not be installed in aircraft stored below −40 °C. In EASA aircraft, installation follows EASA STC 10058132 for types on its approved model list, or another approved modification, and ends with a release to service. The tray and installation kit are separate kits (850-00188-002). Fit depends on the aircraft type and the unit being replaced.
