Bose A30 Aviation Headset

Bose A30 is an around-ear ANR aviation headset, FAA TSO and EASA E/TSO-C139a certified. It weighs 404 g on the head, has three selectable noise reduction modes and an optional Bluetooth interface, and comes with a GA dual plug, 6-pin LEMO, 5-pin XLR (Airbus) or U-174 (helicopter) plug. Cables are straight or coiled.

  • Digital active noise reduction in three selectable modes. A double tap on either earcup engages low mode for talking outside the intercom.

  • The noise-cancelling electret microphone is made for hot-mic and PTT systems. Boom and down cable can be mounted on either side without tools.

  • Two AA batteries run more than 45 hours, or more than 25 hours with Bluetooth. Aircraft-powered versions bypass the batteries.

  • Bluetooth on selected models connects to phones, audio systems and EFBs and mixes with intercom audio or is muted during transmissions.

  • Plug types: GA dual plug (PJ-068 and 1/4 in stereo), 6-pin LEMO, 5-pin XLR (Airbus) and U-174 for helicopters.

  • FAA TSO and EASA E/TSO-C139a certified. Bose reports 145 separate tests by its engineering and quality assurance team.

Comfort and noise reduction

Comfort and noise reduction

The A30 weighs 404 g (14.2 oz) on the head and has 20% less clamping force than the Bose A20. Bose states that it keeps the noise reduction of the A20 at a lower on-head weight.

Digital active noise reduction has three modes: low, medium and high. A double tap on either earcup engages low mode, which optimises the audio for conversation outside the intercom. Incoming signals are shaped by active equalization.

Plug types and power

The GA dual plug (PJ-068 and 1/4 in stereo) is battery powered. The 6-pin LEMO version is aircraft powered with optional battery backup, and the 5-pin XLR (Airbus) version runs on aircraft or battery power. The U-174 version is the helicopter plug.

Two AA batteries run more than 45 hours without Bluetooth and more than 25 hours with it. Other battery chemistries, including rechargeables, can be used. Aircraft-powered units bypass the batteries while aircraft power is applied, and the USB connection in the control module can also power the headset. The headset switches off automatically when not in use.

Microphone and cable

Microphone and cable

The noise-cancelling electret microphone is made for aircraft with hot-mic or PTT systems. Bose also lists 5 ohm and 150 ohm dynamic microphone options for specific configurations. The boom microphone and the down cable can be mounted on either side without tools.

Headset input impedance is 150 ohm in mono and 300 ohm in stereo mode, and headphone sensitivity is 96.5 ± 3.5 dBA SPL, both measured per RTCA DO-214A. The shielded cable is 1.8 m including control module and connector ends; the exact length depends on the configuration. Primary intercom audio is available with or without power.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is fitted to selected models and supports HFP, A2DP, AVRCP, BLE and multipoint. The headset connects to mobile devices, audio systems and electronic flight bags.

Audio prioritisation mixes Bluetooth audio with intercom audio, or mutes Bluetooth temporarily during intercom transmissions. Non-Bluetooth versions are available for every plug type.

In the box and replacement parts

In the box and replacement parts

The box holds the headset, a carrying case with strap and an inner zippered compartment, two AA batteries, a 3.5 mm audio cable, a control module hanger, two clothing clips, and the quick start and owner's guides.

Bose lists these customer-replaceable parts: ear cushions, headband cushion kit, microphone windscreen, a service kit, auxiliary audio input cable, down cable terminal cover, 6-pin to U-174 and 6-pin to GA plug adapters, and a 6-pin aircraft installation kit.

Certification and selection

The A30 is FAA TSO and EASA E/TSO-C139a certified. Where aircraft wiring is changed for a headset connector, the change is an approved modification with a Certificate of Release to Service. Bose does not state fit for a specific aircraft or audio panel.

Bose does not recommend the A30 for open-cockpit aircraft. The right version depends on the plug type, the Bluetooth option and the cable type.
