Which FS-450 version is needed, pump-fed or gravity-fed?
The 450000-P is for carbureted and injected engines with a mechanical fuel pump and a take-off fuel flow of up to 60 gallons per hour (GPH); it carries the 700900-1 transducer, which must not be used on a gravity feed. Systems without a mechanical pump need the 450000-G with the 700900-2. A pressure carburetor with a return line needs two transducers (450000-D); flows up to 120 GPH need the 450000-H.
Can the FS-450 replace the aircraft’s fuel quantity gauges?
No. The FS-450 measures fuel flow and works out fuel used and remaining from the quantity the pilot enters before engine start; it does not sense the tank contents. JPI requires a placard near the indicator: “Do Not Rely on Fuel Flow Instrument to Determine Fuel Levels in Tanks”. If the aircraft already has a primary fuel flow gauge, a second placard refers to the original instrumentation for primary information.
Which GPS receivers can be connected to the FS-450?
Receivers with an RS-232 serial output in one of three formats, which the FS-450 recognises automatically: NMEA-183 at 4,800 baud (the GPS must send the RMB and RMC sentences), Aviation Data at 9,600 baud, or Northstar at 1,200 baud. The FS-450 also sends fuel data back on RS-232 in Garmin, Allied Signal, Arnav or UPS format. With a valid GPS signal it shows fuel required and reserve at the next waypoint or destination.
What is supplied with the FS-450 450000-P, and what has to be added?
The 450000-P consists of the indicator 450000, the wiring harness 450507 and one 700900-1 (FloScan 201) transducer, and JPI’s price list also names a fire sleeve. Hoses and fittings for the engine are not supplied: the hoses must meet TSO-C53a Type C or D, and JPI offers steel hose fittings separately (AN816-4 to 1/4 NPT for most Continentals, AN816-6 for most Lycomings).
Can the FS-450 be installed in an EASA-registered aircraft?
Installation in a certified aircraft needs an approved modification (EASA STC or a minor or standard change where one applies) and a release to service. JPI’s FAA STC SA00861SE covers listed US aircraft types only and is not an EASA approval. To check a specific aircraft, AIR TEAM needs the type, serial number and current avionics.
