Garmin GMU 11 Magnetometer for G3X and G5 (Experimental)

GMU 11, P/N 010-01788-00 (unit only 011-04349-00), is the remote-mounted three-axis magnetometer that Garmin lists for the G3X, G3X Touch and G5 in experimental and light sport aircraft. In a G3X system it supplies magnetic data to the GSU 25 ADAHRS over the CAN bus; with a standalone G5 it is an optional unit. The certified version, P/N 010-01788-01, is a separate product.

  • The unit weighs 72.5 g and measures 69.6 × 23.6 × 96.0 mm (2.74 × 0.93 × 3.78 in).

  • Garmin rates the unit for −55 to +70 °C and for an altitude of 55,000 ft.

  • A 9-pin connector carries the CAN bus and two diode-ORed aircraft power inputs for 14 V and 28 V systems.

  • Supply is 9–32 V from aircraft power at 100 mA. The GSU 25 does not power the GMU 11.

  • Wing mounting is generally preferred, at least 3.0 m from electric motors, relays and servos and 2.5 m from ferromagnetic structure over 1 kg.

  • Garmin lists P/N 010-01788-00 for experimental and light sport aircraft; certified installations use 010-01788-01.

Role in the G3X and G5 systems

Role in the G3X and G5 systems

The GMU 11 measures the magnetic field and passes it to the GSU 25 ADAHRS, which uses it for heading in an electronically stabilized AHRS. The GSU 73 is not compatible with the GMU 11; installations with a GSU 73 use a GMU 22.

For a standalone G5 in experimental and light sport aircraft, Garmin's G5 installation manual lists the GMU 11 as an optional unit. Garmin's G3X Standard LRU kit K10-00016-04 contains the GMU 11, unit only 010-01788-00, together with the GSU 25C.

Connector, power and CAN bus

The 9-pin connector J111 carries CAN bus high and low, unit ID, signal ground, two aircraft power inputs and power ground. The two power inputs are diode-ORed for redundancy, and the unit works on 14 V and 28 V systems. The CAN bus follows ISO 11898.

The GMU 11 must be powered from aircraft power. The magnetometer power pins on the GSU 25 are for the GMU 22 only and are not used with it. A jumper from pin 3 to pin 6 configures the unit as magnetometer 2.

Mounting location and orientation

Mounting location and orientation

Garmin describes the GMU 11 as an extremely sensitive three-axis sensor. The manual asks for at least 3.0 m from electric motors and relays, including servo motors, and 2.5 m from ferromagnetic structure over 1 kg. Ferromagnetic material under 1 kg and devices or conductors above 100 mA need 1.0 m. Mounting materials must be non-magnetic.

Wing mounting is generally preferred and the fuselage is less desirable. The unit is levelled within 3.0° of level cruise attitude, and its forward direction is aligned within 0.5° of one of the four cardinal directions. If the distances cannot be met, the manual calls for a magnetometer interference test.

Part numbers and installation kit

Garmin lists the GMU 11 as assembly P/N 010-01788-00 and unit-only P/N 011-04349-00, in both cases without an installation rack.

Installation kit 011-04349-90 is a separate Garmin accessory. It holds a 9-pin connector kit with CAN termination (011-03002-00), four 6-32 locking nuts, four 6-32 × 0.500 screws and four #6 washers, the hardware in stainless steel.

Replacement and calibration

Garmin's G3X return-to-service procedure requires a new magnetometer calibration whenever a GMU is reinstalled, and also when a new GMU with a new serial number is installed. A new GSU 25, or one moved to another location, also needs AHRS orientation, pitch/roll offset and magnetometer calibration.

When a GMU is removed, the anti-rotation properties of the mounting screws must be restored: with new screws, Garmin P/N 211-60037-08, or with the original screws and Loctite 242 (blue) on the threads. The screws must be brass.
