Garmin G1000 NXi Upgrade Kit K10-00029-11 for Cessna NAV III with GFC 700

Garmin K10-00029-11 is the G1000 NXi upgrade kit for Cessna NAV III aircraft with the GFC 700 autopilot: 172R/S, (T)182T and (T)206H with a WAAS G1000. The NXi displays keep the footprint and connectors of the G1000 displays. Garmin's FAA STC for the update is SA01945WI; a certified EU installation needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service.

  • Garmin names GDU 1054B NXi displays for the 172R/S with autopilot, the (T)182T and the (T)206H.

  • Garmin's FAA STC SA01945WI covers the NXi update of G1000-equipped Cessna 172R/S, (T)182T and (T)206H aircraft.

  • The NXi displays keep the footprint and connectors of the G1000 displays, so panel and wiring modifications are minimal.

  • Flight Stream 510, an SD card in the MFD, brings databases and flight plans from a portable device to the G1000 over a wireless link.

  • NXi software adds SurfaceWatch, vertical situation display, HSI map, NEXRAD animation, visual approach support and IFR/VFR maps.

  • Garmin lists K10-00029-10 and -11 as NAV III kits with GFC 700 and K10-00029-15 and -16 as kits without GFC 700.

Part number and kit variants

Garmin names K10-00029-11 'NAV III NXi Upgrade Kit w/GFC 700'; K10-00029-10 has the same name. Garmin lists the kits without GFC 700 as K10-00029-15 and K10-00029-16. Kits K10-00029-20/-21 (G36) and K10-00029-25/-26 (G58) belong to other airframes.

Aircraft, displays and autopilot

Garmin's NAV III scope is the Cessna 172R/172S, 182T/T182T and 206H/T206H with a WAAS G1000. The NXi displays are GDU 1054B for the 172R/S with autopilot, the (T)182T and the (T)206H, and GDU 1050 for the 172R/S without autopilot.

The GFC 700 is part of the G1000 system description: flight director, autopilot and automatic and manual electric pitch trim, with three GSA 81 servos and GSM 85 gearboxes. Some 172R/S aircraft have no GFC 700, and the autopilot does not operate unless the flight director is engaged.

NXi software and enablement cards

Garmin lists these new features with NXi system software 4013.00 and 4014.02: NEXRAD animation, visual approach support, flight plan auto-nomination, transition to approach, SurfaceWatch, vertical situation display, HSI map, visual reporting points, IFR/VFR maps and dual charts, so the pilot can choose FliteCharts or ChartView.

In the installation checks, ChartView, synthetic vision, SurfaceWatch, TAWS-B, search and rescue and enhanced search and rescue are unlocked with enablement cards in the top PFD slot.

Data link, transponder and system units

Garmin's update list names Flight Stream 510 for data streaming and database updates, and optional GTX 345R and GTX 335R transponders and a GDL 69A SXM datalink. The Flight Stream 510 goes into the bottom SD slot of the MFD and also controls XM or SXM audio.

The system description of the NAV III installation also lists two GIA 63W units, a GMA 1347 audio panel, GDC 74 and GRS 77 or a GSU 75, GTP 59, GMU 44, GEA 71 and an optional GTS 800 traffic processor.

STC and approval path

STC SA01945WI is Garmin's FAA approval for the G1000 NXi hardware and software update of Cessna 172R/S, (T)182T and (T)206H aircraft (and of G36 and G58). It also covers aircraft converted from the earlier G1000 by STC SA01830WI.

SA01945WI is a US approval. Garmin notes that for a foreign-registered aircraft it must be accepted or validated for that country. A certified EU aircraft needs an approved modification accepted by the state of registry and a Certificate of Release to Service.

Installation and post-installation checks

Garmin's checkout procedure 190-02765-00 starts from the software image number on the General Arrangement drawing 005-01474-01, loaded with a loader card, followed by configuration of each unit, enablement cards, databases, splash screens and ground tests: reversion mode, VHF COM fail-safe and transponder checks, with SXM and GTS 800 checks if installed.

The procedure warns that modifications beyond factory configuration that change engine or airspeed limitations may not be supported. The completed record is kept with the aircraft records.
