JPI EDM-830 Engine Monitor, 4 to 9 Cylinders

The EDM-830 is a J.P. Instruments advisory engine monitor with a colour TFT display for a standard 3 1/8 in instrument hole. It shows EGT and CHT for every cylinder with RPM, manifold pressure, fuel flow, oil, outside air temperature and percent power. Kits exist for 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 cylinders. The primary engine instruments stay in the panel.

  • Colour TFT display, viewable in direct and indirect sunlight.

  • LeanFind with true peak detection supports leaning rich and lean of peak.

  • Programmable limits for over-temperature, EGT differential and shock cooling.

  • Adapts to 14 V and 28 V systems; operates from 7.5 to 35 V at 0.5 A.

  • A serial port takes navigation data from a GPS and sends fuel data back to it.

  • Temperature indicator to TSO-C43b; non-primary, installed in the US under FAA STC SA2586NM.

Display and leaning

Display and leaning

The colour TFT display shows EGT and CHT bar graphs for every cylinder with RPM, manifold pressure, fuel flow, oil temperature and pressure, outside air temperature, bus voltage and percent power. Alarm limits are programmed by the pilot.

LeanFind works with true peak detection, rich of peak or lean of peak, and the display shows the temperature below peak EGT. Normalize view, EGT spread and shock cooling are shown alongside. Percent power needs fuel flow, RPM, outside air temperature and manifold pressure.

Mounting, power and connectors

Mounting, power and connectors

The EDM-830 fits a standard 3 1/8 in instrument hole, with a mounting bracket behind the panel on the existing 6-32 screw holes. It mounts in portrait or landscape orientation, set from the front buttons. A flush-mount plate, PN 700830, is available as an option.

Power comes from a separate 5 A circuit breaker or a 2 A slow-blow fuse on the avionics bus. The instrument adapts to 14 V and 28 V systems, switches off below 9.8 V DC and is grounded at the engine.

Data, GPS and fuel flow

Engine data is stored in long-term memory for post-flight retrieval and downloads to a USB flash drive. The EZTrends charting software and a 1 GB memory stick come with the instrument.

A serial port accepts navigation data from a GPS (RS-232, TTL, RS-423 or RS-422) and sends fuel data to the GPS over RS-232. Fuel flow, fuel used and endurance are standard functions.

Variants and installation path

The kits EDM-830-4C, -6C, -7C, -8C and -9C cover four- to nine-cylinder engines and include the harnesses, power connector and mounting clamp. The RPM sensor is chosen for Slick or Bendix magnetos, including pressurized and dual-magneto versions. TIT, IAT, CDT and carburettor temperature are options.

Installation follows JPI Report No. 103 under FAA STC SA2586NM, with an FAA-approved flight manual supplement. The STC is a US approval and not an EASA approval. In a certified aircraft the installation is an approved modification, released with a Certificate of Release to Service.
