Champion REM38E Massive-Electrode Spark Plug

Champion REM38E is a shielded aviation spark plug with two massive nickel-alloy electrodes, an 18 mm mounting thread and 1/2 in (12.7 mm) reach, with a 5/8-24 harness thread and heat rating 38. Champion's AV-14 application guide lists it for short-reach cylinders of Continental and Lycoming engines, among others; the engine manufacturer's approved plug list decides.

  • 18 mm mounting thread, 1/2 in (12.7 mm) reach and 7/8 in hex.

  • Heat rating 38 on the Champion scale, where lower numbers are colder plugs (scale 26 to 50).

  • Shielded barrel with 5/8-24 harness thread and a built-in suppressor resistor.

  • Two massive nickel-alloy electrodes; Champion lists a gap of 0.016–0.021 in (0.41–0.53 mm).

  • Nickel plating and high-temperature epoxy paint protect against corrosion; the threads are plated against seizing.

Construction

Champion lists a fired glass seal that retains the center wire and prevents gas leakage, a fired-in suppressor seal resistor, a copper core for heat transfer, a ceramic insulator and nickel-alloy electrodes. AV-14 states that Champion's shielded aviation plugs are manufactured under military specification MIL-S-7886B.

Nickel plating and high-temperature epoxy paint give two layers of corrosion protection, and the threads are plated against seizing. The paint code for standard-electrode plugs such as REM38E is silver; iridium plugs are gold.

Thread, reach, gap and heat rating

REM38E has an 18 mm mounting thread, 1/2 in (12.7 mm) reach, a 7/8 in hex and a 5/8-24 shielding thread for the harness. Champion lists the plug gap as 0.016–0.021 in (0.41–0.53 mm).

The heat rating position runs from 26 for the coldest to 50 for the hottest plug; REM38E is 38.

Engine applications in the Champion catalogue

AV-14 lists REM38E, among others, for short-reach (1/2 in) cylinders of Continental IO-240, O-300, IO-360, TSIO-360 and IO-470 series engines and Lycoming O-340, O-360, O-540 and IO-540 series engines. Champion takes these entries from FAA-approved data.

AV-14 is dated August 2014, and Champion notes that later service bulletins can revise the listings. The plug list approved by the engine manufacturer decides which plug an engine accepts.

Related plug types

REM38S has the same thread, reach, harness thread and heat rating but a single iridium fine-wire electrode. RHM38E differs in the barrel: its shielded thread is 3/4-20 instead of 5/8-24, for an all-weather plug.

REM40E has the same design as REM38E with heat rating 40. AV-14 lists these types against different engines, so each plug is checked against the approved list of the engine manufacturer.
