TCW Technologies IBBS-12V Backup Battery System

TCW Technologies IBBS-12V is an integrated backup battery system for 12 V aircraft, in 3 Ah and 6 Ah versions. A lithium iron phosphate battery (12.8 V nominal), a charger and the switching logic share one aluminium enclosure. When the main bus fails, the unit keeps critical loads such as EFIS, GPS navigators, autopilots and engine monitors running. Both versions are TCW experimental models without TSO approval.

  • Lithium iron phosphate battery, 12.8 V nominal, in 3 Ah and 6 Ah versions.

  • Outputs switch to the internal battery when the main bus falls to 10.5–11.5 V and deliver 10–14 V DC.

  • 3 Ah: 5 A continuous, 10 A peak. 6 Ah: 8 A continuous, 12 A peak. Peaks last up to 30 seconds.

  • A full battery at 25 °C runs a 3 A load for about 55 minutes (3 Ah) or 110 minutes (6 Ah).

  • Surge and sag protection lets critical equipment keep operating during engine starting.

  • Weighs 510 g (3 Ah) or 964 g (6 Ah) and works from −10 to +60 °C.

Backup operation

With the backup master switch on and the main bus falling to 10.5–11.5 V, the outputs transfer to the internal battery and deliver 10–14 V DC. The input range from the aircraft bus is 13–15 V DC.

Pin 3 of the D-sub connector is a low-voltage warning output and pin 2 carries the battery voltage. A fully discharged battery recharges from the aircraft bus in up to two hours, with a maximum charging input of 2.5 A (3 Ah) or 4.0 A (6 Ah).

Connector and enclosure

Connector and enclosure

Both versions use a standard-density 15-pin male D-sub connector in an aluminium enclosure 7.7 × 2.3 in (196 × 58 mm). The 3 Ah enclosure is 1.6 in (41 mm) high and weighs 18 oz (510 g); the 6 Ah enclosure is taller and weighs 34 oz (964 g).

The wiring harness with the D-sub connector is the separate experimental install kit IBBS-HARN-LiFe.

Runtime by load

TCW rates the battery at 12.8 V and 25 °C, with runtime measured down to 10.0 V. The 3 Ah model runs a 1.5 A load for 120 minutes, 3 A for 55 minutes and 6 A for 25 minutes.

The 6 Ah model doubles these figures to 240, 110 and 55 minutes. Its pass-through rating is 8 A continuous and 12 A peak for up to 30 seconds.

Installation

The unit is mounted inside the aircraft, never in the firewall-forward area. TCW refers to AC 43.13-2A/1B for installation and leaves the suitability for the aircraft to the installer or builder.

One IBBS may back up only one electronic ignition module. TCW names Garmin GNS and GTN, G3X, GRT, AFS, Dynon, MGL EFIS, TruTrak and Trio autopilots as equipment it can serve.

Experimental and certified versions

The IBBS-12V-3AH and IBBS-12V-6AH are experimental models without TSO approval. TCW lists three experimental and three FAA-certified IBBS models; the certified 12 V model is the IBBS-12V-6AH-CRT-V to TSO-C179b.
