uAvionix tailBeaconX TSO is a Mode S transponder with 1090ES ADS-B Out and an internal SBAS/WAAS GPS, integrated with its antennas into an LED rear position light. It transmits 250 W, runs on 9–30.3 V DC and is authorised to TSO-C112e (Level 2els, Class 1), TSO-C166b, TSO-C145e and TSO-C30c. The operating range is −45 to +70 °C up to 35,000 ft.

tailBeaconX is a remote transponder and needs a control head for mode, squawk and pressure altitude. P/N UAX-90059-03 is the tailBeaconX alone. P/N UAX-90059-05 adds the AV-30-C, a 3 in instrument for a 3⅛ in panel hole that controls the transponder and works as an attitude indicator or directional gyro. tailBeaconX is configured on the ground over Wi-Fi with the uAvionix app; the position light is aviation white with 20 cd.

EASA STC 10079395 covers installation on the aircraft listed on FAA AML SA04568CH and requires the AV-30-C, installed before or together with tailBeaconX under EASA STC 10075856. The AV-30-C approval is limited to Part 23 Class I and II aeroplanes up to 6000 lb, a 25,000 ft ceiling and 300 kt Vne. After installation, the aircraft needs a Certificate of Release to Service. tailBeaconX does not replace a rotating anti-collision beacon and is not for aircraft with SatCom or TCAS II. Fit depends on the aircraft type and the installed transponder.

Does tailBeaconX need a separate control head?

Yes. tailBeaconX is a remote transponder; mode, squawk code and pressure altitude come from a control head. Under EASA STC 10079395 that control head is the AV-30-C, installed before or together with tailBeaconX under EASA STC 10075856. P/N UAX-90059-05 includes the AV-30-C; P/N UAX-90059-03 is the tailBeaconX alone.

Is one AV-30-C enough, or are two needed?

One AV-30-C is enough to control tailBeaconX; transponder control works in both attitude indicator (AI) and directional gyro (DG) mode. Replacing both the attitude indicator and the directional gyro takes two AV-30-C units, each locked in its mode. The existing airspeed indicator and altimeter stay in place.

Does the existing transponder and altitude encoder stay in the aircraft?

tailBeaconX is a complete Mode S transponder with ADS-B Out, so it takes over the transponder function. The AV-30-C sends it pressure altitude, mode, squawk code and IDENT, so tailBeaconX does not use a separate altitude encoder. Whether the old encoder can be removed depends on what else it supplies. The transponder is not powered by the AV-30-C internal battery.

Can tailBeaconX supply GPS data to the AV-30-C?

Yes, magnetic track and groundspeed, sent while the AV-30-C controls the transponder. tailBeaconX has no waypoint database, so it provides no navigation guidance; course and waypoint data on the AV-30-C need a separate GPS navigator.

Can tailBeaconX send position or traffic to a tablet over Wi-Fi?

No. Its Wi-Fi is used only on the ground, in standby, to configure the unit with the uAvionix app. tailBeaconX transmits ADS-B Out and does not provide traffic or position data to an electronic flight bag (EFB).

What approval does the installation need in Europe?

Installation in a certified aircraft needs an approved modification and a release to service. EASA STC 10079395 covers tailBeaconX on aircraft listed on FAA AML SA04568CH, with the AV-30-C under EASA STC 10075856. The AV-30-C limits apply: Part 23 Class I and II up to 6000 lb, 25,000 ft ceiling and 300 kt VNE. tailBeaconX is not for aircraft with TCAS II or SatCom. To check a specific aircraft, AIR TEAM needs the type, serial number and current avionics.
