Winter 4 FGH 40, item 4550, is a three-pointer sensitive altimeter with a 0–1000–20,000 ft range and a millibar (hPa) altimeter setting scale. The large pointer has 10 ft graduations, the small pointer 100 ft and the third pointer 1000 ft. The instrument has a 57 mm case, needs 106 mm depth and weighs 0.235 kg.
An evacuated copper-beryllium aneroid capsule measures static pressure; a jewelled movement transmits its travel to the pointers, and a bimetal link compensates for temperature. The airtight black plastic case has a hose connector on the rear for the static line. Item 4555 is the same instrument with an inHg setting scale.
Winter lists item 4550 with an EASA Form 1. A leak test of the instrument system follows every installation; Winter specifies a leak test at least every 2 years and recommends retesting after 5 years. Fit depends on the aircraft type and the required setting scale (hPa or inHg).
