f.u.n.k.e. AVIONICS ATR833-II OLED VHF COM Transceiver

The ATR833-II OLED is a 6 W VHF COM transceiver in a 2¼-inch (57 mm) panel format with 8.33 and 25 kHz channel spacing and a built-in voice-controlled intercom for up to four microphones. The OLED display shows 128 × 64 dots and suits installations without direct sunlight. The radio holds ETSO-2C169a and ETSO-2C128 under EASA.21O.10062108.

  • VHF COM transceiver, 6 W output power, 118.000–136.975 MHz, with 8.33 and 25 kHz channel spacing.

  • OLED display with 128 × 64 dots; the manufacturer names installations without direct sunlight as the suited use.

  • Voice-controlled intercom for up to four microphones, with automatic microphone type detection; it can be deactivated.

  • Replay of the last 9 seconds of a received call, 20 named frequency memories and a list of the 10 last used frequencies.

  • Supply of 11–30 V DC; the manufacturer requires an external 4 A slow-blow fuse in the supply line.

  • ETSO-2C169a (transceiver class 4 and 6, receiver class C, E, H1 and H2), ETSO-2C128 and EASA.21O.10062108.

Display and operation

Display and operation

The front carries the buttons I/O, DW, SET, MEM, SWAP and CURSOR and two rotary knobs, VOL/SEL and FREQ. Holding SET for at least 5 seconds opens the setup menu, and from firmware 3.04 an external button on pin 10 can also swap the frequencies.

The transmitter stops automatically after 35 seconds of uninterrupted transmission. A configurable energy saving mode darkens the display automatically.

Frequencies, memory and dual watch

The channel spacing, 8.33 or 25 kHz, follows the entered frequency; the setup menu can also limit the radio to 25 kHz. The MEM key opens the list of 20 named frequencies, a second press opens the list of the 10 last used, and a press of two seconds stores the standby frequency.

The radio has a single receiver. Dual watch therefore alternates between the standby and the active frequency; a signal on the active frequency has priority. Squelch must be set to at least 1 for dual watch to work.

Intercom and audio inputs

Two microphone inputs accept standard and dynamic microphones at the same time; with the MIC type set to auto, the dynamic input has priority. Two headsets can be connected in parallel per input if the total impedance stays at or above 100 Ω.

The auxiliary audio input takes warning tones or music, and its priority against radio reception is configurable. When it is not used, it must be short-circuited to ground; the cable sets from the manufacturer carry a blind plug for this. The speaker output delivers at least 4 W into 4 Ω.

Installation and interfaces

The radio is fixed from the front with two hollow screws and two 4 × 8 mm screws in a 2¼-inch cut-out. One 25-pin D-Sub connector carries every connection except the antenna, which needs a 50 Ω VHF COM antenna approved for the aircraft and placed well away from ELT and other VHF antennas. The compass-safe distance is 30 cm.

The ATR833RT remote control unit can operate the radio. Installation in a certified aircraft needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service.

Scope of delivery and display versions

The manufacturer lists the transceiver, two mounting screws and two hollow screws for panels up to 3 mm, a connector where no cable set is ordered, the operation and installation manual and an EASA Form 1.

The same radio is made with an LCD display, whose manufacturer description stresses sunlight readability and low power consumption, and with this OLED display. The manufacturer also lists a conversion between the two versions with a software update. The ATR833-II-BOX is a separate unit without an integrated control unit.
