Continental 646791 is the seal collar on the rotor shaft of the Continental 100-amp gear-driven alternator 649304 and alternator and coupling assembly 649305. Continental Service Bulletin SB24-03 names it as the collar seal fitted with O-ring 630979-21; the bulletin covers these alternators on GTSIO-520, IO-520, TSIO-520, IO-550, TSIO-550 and TSIOL-550 engine models.
Under SB24-03 the collar is removed for a rotor shaft measurement and its chamfered edge is inspected; wear, displaced or missing material requires replacement of the alternator. A serviceable collar is pressed back onto the shaft, chamfered end first, according to the Alternator Service Support Manual X30531, with a new O-ring lubricated with 50 wt aviation engine oil. The O-ring is a separate item. The work ends with a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the alternator P/N.
