What comes with the D3, and can mounts from a D2 be reused?
The D3 comes with a USB-C charging cable, an AC wall charger, a 14/28 V DC vehicle charger, a USB-C adapter for a thumb drive (for software updates), a RAM suction-cup mount, a pinch mount for an empty 3 1/8 in (80 mm) instrument hole, an external GPS antenna and a matte screen protector. The pinch mount and external GPS receiver are the same Dynon parts as for the D1 and D2, and Dynon also sells them as spares.
How long does the D3 run on its battery, and how is it charged?
At least 5.5 hours from a full charge at full brightness, and more than 7 hours with synthetic vision off at 60% brightness. It charges through its USB-C port from the supplied wall or vehicle charger or another USB-C source; a full charge from empty takes about 6 hours with a source of 1.5 A or more. Dynon notes that some third-party USB-C chargers may not charge the D3.
Can the D3 be wired permanently into the aircraft or flush-mounted in the panel?
No. The D3 is a portable unit powered and charged only through its USB-C port; the supplied vehicle charger works in 14 V and 28 V aircraft. In the panel, the pinch mount holds it in an empty 3 1/8 in (80 mm) instrument hole and comes out without tools. Dynon points out that regulators do not permit permanent mounting of portable devices in type-certificated aircraft.
Does the D3 need GPS to show pitch and roll?
Yes. Attitude comes from internal solid-state gyros and accelerometers, but the D3 shows no attitude until it has a GPS fix, and it removes attitude, speed, altitude and track shortly after the GPS signal is lost. Only the slip/skid ball works without GPS. The internal GPS antenna is enough with a clear view of the sky; in the panel, Dynon recommends the supplied external GPS antenna.
Can the D3 replace required instruments, for example for night VFR?
No. The D3 has no TSO (Technical Standard Order) authorization from the FAA or any other authority, so it cannot replace a required flight instrument in a type-certificated aircraft. Dynon offers it as a portable situational-awareness aid that needs no installation. Its GPS-based speed, altitude, vertical speed and track will differ from the aircraft's pitot-static and heading instruments.
Can the units and the G-meter limits be changed?
Yes. In the settings menu, ground speed can be shown in knots, mph or km/h and altitude in feet or metres. The G-meter offers normal and aerobatic ranges, and the yellow and red marks can be set for both positive and negative load factors. The altitude shown is GPS altitude, so it can differ from the barometric altimeter.
