Yaesu FTA-550 AA is the AA-battery version of the FTA-550 VHF airband handheld transceiver with VOR and ILS localizer display. It transmits on 118.000–136.975 MHz with 1.5 W carrier output (5.0 W PEP), receives 108.000–136.975 MHz across the NAV and COM bands, and works with 25 kHz or 8.33 kHz channel spacing.

The 8.33 kHz step is selected in the COM setup menu and applies to the COM band only. On the NAV band the display shows a CDI with OBS and TO/FROM indication for VOR and a localizer CDI for ILS; there is no glide slope receiver and no GPS. Yaesu defines the navigation functions as a supplemental aid only. The radio has 200 memory channels with 15-character names, dual watch on a priority channel, a dedicated 121.5 MHz key, a 1.7 × 1.7 in dot-matrix display (160 × 160), IPX5 water protection and testing to MIL-STD-810F.

The FTA-550 AA runs on six AA alkaline cells in the SBT-12 tray, which is not designed for rechargeable cells. The SDD-12 cigarette-lighter adapter powers the radio from 12–24 V DC. The Li-ion pack, AC charger and cradle of the FTA-550L are not supplied. The antenna jack is BNC. Transmitting in the EU requires authorization from the national spectrum authority.
