Case, lid and terminals

Case, lid and terminals

The case label reads G-243, 24V 10Ah, 12 CELLS and FAA-PMA.

Teledyne's drawing gives the case as 7.150 × 7.112 in (181.6 × 180.6 mm). Across the lid flanges the plan size reaches 8.650 × 7.312 in (219.7 × 185.7 mm).

Activation and first charge

Teledyne service manual Q01-1120 describes the activation of Gill dry-charged batteries. The vent caps are fitted tightly after filling, and no more than 8 hours may pass between filling and the start of charging. The initial constant current for the G-243 is 3 A, reduced to 1.5 A once the cells start gassing.

After the first hour of charge the level in each cell is checked against the bottom of the split ring. At this stage only electrolyte is added, not water. The electrolyte contains sulfuric acid, so goggles and acid-resistant gloves are required.

Performance data

Teledyne's Appendix A sheet for the G-243 gives, at 1.67 V per cell and 24 °C, 17 A for 30 minutes (8.5 Ah), 10 A for 60 minutes (10 Ah) and 0.8 A at the 20-hour rate (16 Ah). The cold figure is 150 A for 60 seconds at −18 °C to 1.2 V per cell.

Teledyne specifies a capacity check inspection every 12 months or 800 hours.

Approvals and installation

The Teledyne data sheet states FAA-PMA and names the Cessna 152 and 182 in its certification list. FAA-PMA is a US parts approval and does not replace EASA approval.

On an EASA-registered aircraft the battery is replaced according to the approved maintenance data of that aircraft and released to service with a Certificate of Release to Service.
