Garmin GTN Xi 16 W COM Enablement Card

Garmin 010-00878-04 is the 16 W COM enablement card for the GTN 635Xi, 650Xi and 750Xi navigators. Once the option is configured, it raises the VHF COM transmit power from the standard 10 W to 16 W. The enablement is an SD card, and Garmin lists the same enablement as the download 006-D2990-04.

  • Raises the VHF COM transmit power from the standard 10 W to 16 W (16 W minimum output in 16 W mode).

  • Documented for the GTN 635Xi, 650Xi and 750Xi navigators.

  • In 16 W mode Garmin recommends a transmit duty cycle of 25 %, for example 5 seconds on and 15 seconds off.

  • COM connector current draw at 14 V: 5.66 A maximum in 16 W mode, 4.02 A in 10 W mode.

  • Garmin states that 16 W COM transmit power should be enabled for aircraft certified to fly above FL180.

  • Each card enables one GTN Xi only; a dual installation needs a card for each unit.

What the enablement changes

With the optional 16 W COM power configured, the GTN Xi COM transmits with 16 W rather than the standard 10 W. The enablement is an SD card that is inserted during configuration.

Garmin documents the feature only for the GTN 635Xi, 650Xi and 750Xi. The same enablement is also available as download 006-D2990-04.

Enabling the 16 W setting

The setting is enabled in configuration mode. Power is removed by pulling the GPS/NAV circuit breaker, the database SD card is replaced with the 16W enablement card, and the unit is powered on in configuration mode. Under GTN Options, COM Transmit Power the 16W key is touched and the prompt is confirmed.

The prompt states that enabling consumes a feature unlock key. When the feature is active, the 16W key is lit green.

Transmitter and supply data

Transmitter output power is 10 W minimum in the standard mode and 16 W minimum in 16 W mode. The frequency range is 118.000 to 136.975 MHz with 25 kHz spacing and up to 136.992 MHz with 8.33 kHz spacing.

COM connector current draw at 14 V is 5.66 A maximum in 16 W mode and 4.02 A in 10 W mode. At 28 V it is 2.33 A and 1.76 A. Typical draw is 0.45 A at 14 V and 0.21 A at 28 V.

Applicability and certification path

Garmin lists 010-00878-04 in the enablement card table of the GTN Xi TSO installation manual and in the options table of the GTN 6XX/7XX installation manual.

A certified installation is an approved modification followed by a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the GTN model and the aircraft type.
