Which wires does the harness have, and can it connect to an audio panel?

Nine leads: power (red), power and data ground (black), serial port 1 data out (blue) and in (yellow), serial port 2 data out (orange) and in (purple), and audio right (white), common (green) and left (brown). The audio leads connect the aera audio output to an audio panel or other audio input; for a mono input Garmin uses common (green) and left (brown).

Can this harness also power a GDL 39 or GDL 51/52?

No, it carries only the aera's own power, data and audio. In a hard-wired installation the GDL uses its own bare-wire power/data cable, 010-11686-40, and its data wires go to serial port 1 of the aera (blue to white/green, yellow to green). The single cable that powers both the aera and the GDL from a cigarette lighter socket is 010-11686-50.

Can the aera 795/796 show ADS-B traffic from a GTX 345 through this harness?

Yes, with aera software 4.90 or later; a GNX 375 connects the same way. Either serial port of the aera connects over RS-232 and receives ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance – broadcast) traffic, weather and attitude data, which also enables the full 3D view. A GTX 330 Mode S transponder can send TIS-A (traffic information service) traffic to the aera's data-in wire.

Can the aera exchange data with a panel-mounted GPS navigator or COM radio?

From a Garmin panel-mounted GPS receiver the aera accepts aviation data, so the destination does not have to be entered on both units. To a Garmin SL30, SL40, GTR 200, GTR 225 or GNC 255 it sends frequency lists for departure, en-route and arrival airports and can tune the standby frequency. Garmin states that the radio interface has no FAA installation airworthiness approval.

Can the aera send GPS data to an autopilot or engine monitor through this harness?

Yes, to equipment that accepts NMEA 0183, the standard GPS data format. With a serial port set to NMEA output, the aera sends position, velocity and navigation sentences: a short set every second in Fast mode or a fuller set every 2 seconds in Normal mode. The sentences and settings the receiving unit needs are given in its own installation documents.
