Garmin GNS 430 GPS/NAV/COM Navigator

GNS 430 is a panel-mounted GPS/NAV/COM navigator without WAAS: 12-channel GPS for IFR en route, terminal and non-precision approach, a VHF COM of at least 10 W, and VOR, localizer and glideslope receivers. P/N 011-00280-10 takes 11–33 V DC (14 V and 28 V systems). A certified EU installation beyond CS-STAN limits needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service.

  • The LCD has 240 × 128 pixels in a 6.25 × 2.66 in (159 × 67 mm) bezel. The navigation and terrain databases load from two data cards in the front panel.

  • The 12-channel GPS receiver is listed to TSO-C129a for IFR en route, terminal and non-precision approach. LPV approaches need the WAAS GNS 430W.

  • The VHF COM tunes 118.000–136.975 MHz in 25 kHz steps and can be set to 8.33 kHz spacing (2,280 channels). Transmit power is at least 10 W.

  • VOR (108.00–117.95 MHz), localizer and glideslope receivers are built in. Interfaces are ARINC 429, RS-232, CDI/HSI, RMI, altitude input and fuel/air data.

  • P/N 011-00280-10 takes 11–33 V DC and runs on 14 V and 28 V systems. P/N 011-00280-00 and the GNS 430A are 28 V units.

  • The unit weighs 2.3 kg, or 2.9 kg installed with rack and connectors. Depth behind the panel is 279 mm; operating range is −20 to +55 °C.

Front panel and pages

Front panel and pages

The COM and VLOC windows at the left of the display each show an active and a standby frequency with a flip-flop key; pressing and holding the COM flip-flop key selects 121.500 MHz. The right-hand knobs select the page group (NAV, WPT, AUX or NRST) and the page within it, and holding CLR returns to the default NAV page.

The NAV group has seven pages: default NAV, map, TERRAIN, NAV/COM, position, satellite status and vertical navigation. The bottom row holds the CDI, OBS, MSG, FPL and PROC keys.

Flight plans, approaches and CDI scale

The unit stores up to 20 flight plans of up to 31 waypoints each, and up to nine checklists of up to 30 entries. Approaches come from the NavData card and are selected with the PROC key; Direct-To and OBS mode have their own keys.

The CDI scale follows the phase of flight: 5.0 nm full scale en route, 1.0 nm in terminal mode within 30 nm of the destination, and 0.3 nm in approach mode within 2.0 nm of the final approach fix.

Interfaces and connected equipment

ARINC 429 output runs in four configurations (ARINC 429, GAMA 429, GAMA 429 Graphics and GAMA 429 Graphics with Int), and RS-232 output in two formats (Type 1, ARNAV, and Type 2, Northstar). Altitude and fuel/air data come in over a serial input (Icarus, Shadin or Rosetta formats) or as Gillham code.

With a traffic or weather source connected, the NAV group grows to eight or nine pages. Garmin notes that the lateral and vertical deviation outputs of the main board carry 120 ms of internal transport delay and suit only applications where that delay has been evaluated.

Databases, data cards and TERRAIN

The Jeppesen NavData card goes in the left card slot and the terrain card in the right-most slot. Garmin lists data cards for Worldwide, Americas and International coverage and terrain cards of 128 MB and 256 MB; the 256 MB card needs main software 5.02 or later. Database updates are released every 28 days.

The TERRAIN page needs the terrain card. Garmin states that TERRAIN is an aid to awareness and not a certified terrain awareness system, and that the basemap is not for navigation.

EASA path and installation limits

EASA FAQ 46836 (last updated May 2018) states that the COM, NAV and GPS functions of Garmin GNS devices can be eligible for CS-STAN through CS-SC052b with CS-SC001 and CS-SC056. The limits of CS-SC052b apply: any connection to an autopilot is not permitted, because that goes beyond situational-awareness use.

Beyond those limits a certified EU installation needs an approved modification for the aircraft type and a Certificate of Release to Service. Garmin's initial certification was an FAA STC on a Piper PA32; STC SA00705WI (GNS 430 and 430A) is an FAA approval, not an EASA one. Fit depends on the P/N and the aircraft type.
