Garmin GSB 15 USB Charging and Database Hub

Garmin GSB 15 is a panel-mounted USB hub with two charging ports for 14/28 V DC aircraft systems. It is a TSO-C71 article. The P/Ns differ in port type (Type-A or Type-C) and connector position (rear or side); the connector also carries the USB data link used for database and software loads into Garmin units.

Two USB ports per unit: Type-A and Type-A, Type-A and Type-C, or Type-C and Type-C, depending on the P/N.
Up to 18 W per port on Dual Type-A units, and up to 27 W per port on Type-A and Type-C and on Dual Type-C units.
Supply 14/28 V DC. Maximum draw with both ports charging and backlight on: 2.86 A at 14 V (Dual Type-A), 4.86 A (Type-C versions).
Weight 70 g for every version. Mounts in a 25.4 mm (1 in) panel hole; no cooling requirements.
TSO-C71 article with no non-TSO functions. Installation in an aircraft needs separate approval.

Ports and charging power

Dual Type-A units (010-02201-xx) have two USB Type-A ports with up to 18 W each. The Type-A and Type-C units and the Dual Type-C units (010-02544-xx) deliver up to 27 W on each port, Type-A or Type-C. Qualcomm Quick Charge is supported on the Type-A ports.

While a port transfers data, its output is limited to 7.5 W on Type-A and 15 W on Type-C. With no device connected, the unit draws 500 mW at 14 V.

Power input and connector

The rear label shows the 14/28 V DC input and the TSO-C71 marking. Maximum power with both ports charging and the backlight on is 40 W for Dual Type-A units (2.86 A at 14 V, 1.43 A at 28 V) and 68 W for the Type-C versions (4.86 A at 14 V, 2.43 A at 28 V).

The unit connects through a six-position locking housing with six crimp contacts from connector kit 011-05044-00. Power is applied only after the connector is fully seated; connecting under power can damage the unit and other equipment on the data lines.

Panel mounting

The unit is installed from behind the panel, with its round face passing through a 25.4 mm (1 in) hole. At least two of the four mounting holes are used, diagonally opposite, with a recommended torque of 6 to 8 lbf-in. The rotation within the opening is left to the installer.

Adapter plates for existing 2.25 in and 3.125 in instrument holes are separate Garmin kits, as are the decorative covers. Both connector positions, rear and side, are available.

USB data interface and maintenance

The connector carries a USB interface through which Garmin units receive database and software loads. The GSB 15 does not load operating software of its own, has no configuration setup and needs no license.

Maintenance is on condition only, and the unit has no non-TSO functions.

TSO-C71 and Garmin's EASA statement

The GSB 15 is a TSO-C71 article, an airborne static DC-to-DC electrical power converter. Garmin states that under Bilateral Oversight Board Decision 006 the FAA TSO authorization makes it an approved article within the EASA system.

Garmin's manual adds that installation in an aircraft needs separate approval. The nameplate carries the marking TSO-C71 with a reference to the installation manual for additional appliance approvals. Garmin's documents name no ETSO.

Versions and what the P/Ns include

Rear connector: 010-02201-10 (Dual Type-A), 010-02544-21 (Type-A and Type-C) and 010-02544-41 (Dual Type-C). Side connector: 010-02201-11, 010-02544-31 and 010-02544-51, with the same port types. 010-02201-00 is the Dual Type-A rear version shipped without the connector kit.

The other six P/Ns include connector kit 011-05044-00. Fit depends on the P/N and the aircraft type.

Time: Typically 3–4 weeks. Warranty 3 months. Released on EASA Form 1 or FAA 8130-3.

Repair

Serial: Yours stays. No swap unit — that is Exchange.
Shop: We inspect, quote, then repair. Accept the repair quote and the evaluation fee already paid is deducted. Decline or BER — unit returns as-is; evaluation fee stays.
Time: Typically 2–6 weeks after you approve the quote, parts depending. Warranty 3 months. Released on EASA Form 1 or FAA 8130-3.

Return the core in equivalent packaging, with removal data and a non-incident statement where you have them. Late, incomplete, or rejected-core terms are on the quote.

Does the GSB 15 need cooling air?

No. Garmin states that the GSB 15 has no cooling requirements. Forced air would lower the internal temperature and prolong the life of the unit.

In a warm installation the unit may reduce its output until it has cooled, limiting it to 5 V and 1.5 A on a Type-A port and 5 V and 3 A on a Type-C port. Normal output then resumes.

Can the unit go into an existing 2.25 in or 3.125 in instrument hole?

Yes, with an adapter plate. Kit 011-05043-00 is for 2.25 in holes and kit 011-05043-01 for 3.125 in holes. Each kit holds one adapter plate and two 4-40 screws; the kits weigh 0.05 kg and 0.09 kg.

Without a plate, the unit needs a 25.4 mm (1 in) hole. Both kits are separate Garmin items and are not part of the unit P/Ns.

What is needed to install the GSB 15 in a certified aircraft?

Installation needs separate approval. In an EASA aircraft that is an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service. Garmin recommends installation by a Garmin-authorized installer.

The installation manual is not a substitute for airframe-specific installation data. The wiring follows AC 43.13-1B, chapter 11, sections 8 to 13.

Which Garmin units can receive databases through the GSB 15?

Garmin's installation manual speaks of compatible Garmin units and gives no list by model. The GI 275 installation manual lists the GSB 15 (010-02201-10, 010-02201-11, 010-02544-21, -31, -41 and -51) as an accessory.

The model needs to be checked against the documents of the Garmin unit concerned before a database load is planned.

Can the backlight be switched off or dimmed?

All versions have a configurable halo backlight. Grounding connector pin 5 switches it off; leaving the pin open switches it on. The Type-C versions can also follow a dimmer bus between 0 V DC and aircraft power.

The brightness is calibrated for night use and may not be visible in daylight.

What else is needed besides the unit?

Connector kit 011-05044-00 is a required accessory; every P/N except 010-02201-00 includes it. The installer supplies the wiring and a circuit breaker, and M81824/1-2 splices may be needed on 14 V aircraft.

Adapter plates and decorative covers are optional and separate. Pigtails must be shorter than 2.5 in (63 mm). Fit depends on the P/N and the aircraft type.

Does a decorative cover affect the TSO approval?

No. Garmin states that the covers are for decoration only, are not TSO qualified and do not affect the TSO functions of the GSB 15. The unfinished cover is 011-05291-00 and the black powder-coated cover is 011-05291-01.

For the unfinished cover, Garmin recommends finishing methods below 120 °C. The recommended installation temperature for a cover is 21 to 38 °C.
