Garmin GTX 23 ES is a remote-mount Mode S Level 2 transponder with 1090 MHz extended squitter (ADS-B Out) and no controls on the unit; Garmin unit P/N 011-02803-02. It transmits 250 W nominal (125 W minimum) and runs on 14 or 28 V DC. Garmin introduced it for experimental and light sport aircraft with the G3X display.

In a G3X or G3X Touch system the GDU displays control the GTX 23 ES and the ADAHRS supplies pressure altitude; control from a GTN 6XX/7XX is not supported. ADS-B Out needs an external GPS position source over RS-232, such as a GNS 400W/500W WAAS unit or a GTN 6XX/7XX. Software 7.01 and later meets ADS-B Version 2 (TSO-C166b, DO-260B), and TIS-A traffic is passed to the G3X system.

Approvals depend on the software: v6.20 is listed under ETSO-2C112b Class 1 and ETSO-C166a, v8.xx under TSO-C112d Class 1 Level 2ens and TSO-C166b. 011-02803-02 is offered as a serviceable/overhauled unit and as a repair of the customer’s unit; warranty and release document are stated in the quote. A certified aircraft needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the aircraft type, the controlling display and the GPS position source; a repair quote needs the unit S/N.
