KGS Electronics SB200 2 kVA Static Inverter

KGS Electronics SB200 is a 2 kVA static inverter that converts 28 V DC to single-phase 230 V AC, 50 Hz sine wave. It is the 50 Hz version of the SS200/SB200 family and is qualified to RTCA DO-160C for operation from −55 to +71 °C and up to 55,000 ft. Power, output and control share one MS3102A32-1P connector.

  • Input 28 V DC (20–36.5 V DC): 2.0 A with no load and 83 A at full load.

  • Output 230 V AC (215–240 V), 50 Hz, 8.7 A RMS, with 0.5 % nominal distortion and 87 % nominal efficiency.

  • Overload capacity is 110 % for 2 hours and 150 % for 5 minutes; short circuit and overtemperature shut the unit down.

  • Operating range −55 to +71 °C up to 55,000 ft, with a thermostatic brushless fan above 50 °C.

  • Weighs 8.04 kg; housing 355.6 × 165.3 × 158.2 mm with four mounting holes.

Input, output and control share one MS3102A32-1P connector, which mates with an MS3106*32-1S plug. Pin A carries the 230 V AC output, pin B the +28 V DC input, pin C the output return (neutral) and pin E the DC input return and chassis ground.

Pin D is the remote on/off input: the inverter runs when it is grounded.

Output and protection

A crystal-controlled oscillator holds the output frequency and a pulse-width-modulated stage forms the sine wave. Response time is 300 µs, regulation is 1 %, 1 % and 2.5 %, and the power factor range is +0.8 to −0.8.

The inverter shuts down above 37.5 V DC or below 18 V DC input, on internal high temperature and on short circuit, with a manual reset.

SS200 and SB200 versions

The SS200 delivers 115 V AC at 60 Hz and the SB200 delivers 230 V AC at 50 Hz; both are 2 kVA sine-wave inverters for 28 V DC systems. KGS lists FAA TSO-C73 for the 60 Hz SS series.

KGS names laptops, entertainment systems, microwave ovens, coffee makers and medical equipment as typical loads in airborne, marine and ground mobile applications.

Environmental qualification

The SB200 is qualified to RTCA DO-160C, environmental category F3ZBB[LV]E1XXXXXBXAXXXZXXX. The operating range is −55 to +71 °C up to 55,000 ft, and a thermostatically controlled brushless fan cools the unit above 50 °C.

In a certified aircraft the inverter needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service after installation.
