UMA 8-310-20 Vertical Speed Indicator

UMA 8-310-20 is a 3⅛ in (79 mm) vertical speed indicator with a range of ±2000 ft/min and the dial name “Vertical Speed”. It weighs 8.8 oz (about 250 g) and connects to the aircraft static line. It belongs to UMA’s non-TSO range of flight instruments for experimental aircraft.

The 8-310-20 reads ±2000 ft/min. The dial is marked “Vertical Speed” and “1000 ft per min”, with a scale from 0 to 2 in each direction and arrows for up and down.

UMA lists the same range with other dial names: “Climb” as 8-310-22, “Rate of Change” as 8-310-23 and “Cabin Climb” as 8-310-24.

Other ranges and metric version

UMA lists the 3⅛ in series with ranges of ±3000 ft/min (8-310-30), ±4000 ft/min (8-310-40) and ±6000 ft/min (8-310-60). Each range comes in four dial names, the same as for ±2000 ft/min.

The metric version is 8-311-10 with a range of ±10 m/s. The 2¼ in size is a separate series, 8-210.

Installation and static connection

UMA’s installation instructions for vertical speed indicators call for mounting the instrument in the panel, connecting its port to the static line and adding a screen mesh filter.

Lighting and TSO counterpart

UMA lists internal electroluminescent lighting for its vertical speed indicators in blue-white, aviation green and red. An external DC-AC inverter is required.

The 8-310-20 is a non-TSO instrument from UMA’s range for experimental aircraft. UMA lists its TSO-C8e vertical speed indicators separately under P/Ns with the T8 prefix, such as T8-310-20. Fit depends on the aircraft type.
