Whelen 72170 series LED recognition lights (P/N 01-0772170-01, -02, -03 and -09) run on 14–28 V DC and replace the 71125 series in the same 2 × 3 in housing of 83 × 32 × 50 mm (width × depth × height). Each light draws 1.1 A at 14 V or 0.56 A at 28 V and weighs 0.36 lb (163 g); Whelen states 70,000 cd for the series. The lights have pre-attached flying leads; brackets and mounting hardware are not included.
The versions differ in beam pattern: -01 has a 10° beam, -02 (7217002) 20°, -03 (7217003) a 30° vertical beam and -09 (7217009) 150°. Because the series covers 14 V and 28 V, one P/N replaces both voltage versions of the 71125: Whelen cross-references 7112510 and 7112520 to -01, 7112511 and 7112521 to -02, 7112523 to -03, and 7112512 and 7112522 to -09.
Whelen lists no STC and no approval for the 72170 series. A certified aircraft needs approved data for the installation and a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the beam version, the aircraft type and the P/N of the light being replaced.
