Garmin GI 275 Electronic Flight Instrument

Garmin GI 275 is a touchscreen flight instrument for a standard 3.125-inch (3 ATI) round panel hole, mounted from behind the panel. The 2.69-inch display and a dual concentric knob replace an attitude indicator, HSI, CDI, MFD or engine indication, depending on version. Garmin announced EASA approval for over 1,000 aircraft models in January 2021.

  • 2.69-inch touchscreen, 480 × 433 pixels, with a dual concentric rotary knob, in a 3.125-inch (3 ATI) round panel hole.

  • Works as primary or standby attitude indicator, HSI, MFD, engine indication or IVSI, depending on version and configuration.

  • ADAHRS versions provide attitude, airspeed and altitude; heading comes from a remote GMU 11 or GMU 44B magnetometer.

  • Internal backup battery charges during normal operation. Garmin quotes 60 minutes in primary or standby installations.

  • Interfaces: ARINC 429, RS-232, RS-485 and CAN bus. Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth, both 2.4 GHz, are used for databases and Garmin Pilot.

  • Garmin states that its FAA TSO authorization makes the GI 275 an approved article in the EASA system. Installation still needs an approved modification.

Panel format and housing

Panel format and housing

The GI 275 mounts from behind the panel in a 3.125-inch round hole (3 ATI). Garmin gives the face as 82.6 × 82.6 mm, the depth as 163.6 mm and 188.0 mm with the connector. Unit weight is 0.86 kg for the Base and NVIS versions and 0.95 kg for the other versions, both without battery; ADAHRS versions with battery weigh 1.1 kg.

A panel modification guide, 115-03278-00, is included with each unit for cutouts that need adjusting. A KI-256 to 3.125-inch adapter kit, 011-05285-00 or -01, is available separately.

Pages and functions

Pages and functions

As an ADI the GI 275 shows attitude, airspeed, altitude, vertical speed and flight director. As an HSI it adds heading, course and vertical deviation, GPS navigation data and a moving map with traffic and weather overlay. The MFD pages cover traffic, terrain, weather, flight plan and waypoint data, and a radar altimeter display.

A unit configured as standby ADI can revert to the ADI page, manually or automatically, when attitude or air data disagree with the primary source. The 2.69-inch display has a 480 × 433 pixel format.

Versions and part numbers

Garmin lists the shipping-level P/Ns of the GI 275 as follows: 010-01912-10 ADAHRS; -20 ADAHRS with autopilot interface; -30 Class III ADAHRS; -40 Class III ADAHRS with autopilot interface; -50 IVSI; -60 NVIS; -70 NVIS with ADAHRS.

Each 010-02326 kit pairs a unit with its connector kit; -10, -20, -30, -40 and -70 add the backup battery, -31, -61 and -71 have none. The 010-02327 kits add a GMU 11 with installation kit (-10, -20) or a GMU 44B with connector kit, rack and mount (-30, -40).

Connectors and pitot-static ports

Connectors and pitot-static ports

ADAHRS versions have two pneumatic ports for the aircraft pitot and static lines, with 1/8-27 ANPT female threads; the installer fabricates the hoses. The connector kit is a required accessory sold separately: 011-04809-00 for the Base and 011-04809-01 for the other versions, which uses two 78-pin D-sub connectors.

The optional backup GPS antenna, 010-12444-10, connects by BNC with an 8 ft cable. It aids AHRS alignment and VFR navigation and is not certified for IFR navigation.

Backup battery

Backup battery

The battery pack, 010-02304-00 (011-04528-00), is internal, weighs 0.15 kg and sits under a cover plate with captive screws. It charges in normal operation and carries the unit through a main power failure. The battery must be installed before the unit goes into the panel.

On battery power, wireless, USB, ARINC 429, nav composite, audio and several analog outputs shut down to extend running time. Garmin quotes 60 minutes for primary or standby installations; kits 010-02326-31, -61 and -71 ship without battery.

Approval and installation path

The installation manual states that the FAA TSO authorization makes the GI 275 an approved article within the EASA system. The same text says that TSO articles need a separate approval for installation in an aircraft. Garmin announced EASA approval for installation in over 1,000 single- and multi-engine aircraft models in January 2021.

A certified installation needs an approved modification that covers the aircraft type and a Certificate of Release to Service. Garmin's Part 23 AML STC is a US approval and not EASA approval.
