Garmin GMA 35c Remote Audio Panel

Garmin GMA 35c (P/N 010-00831-41 and 010-00831-81) is a remote-mounted digital audio processor with marker beacon receiver and Bluetooth that provides the functions of an audio panel behind the instrument panel. It has no controls of its own: operation runs through a separate touchscreen controller over RS-232. Both P/Ns carry TSO-C35d and TSO-C139 and include the GMA 35 connector kit.

  • Intercom for 6 or 7 positions (pilot, copilot and 4 or 5 passengers), depending on configuration.

  • Bluetooth (A2DP, HFP) for music and telephone calls from a phone or tablet; the Bluetooth antenna kit is required.

  • Marker beacon receiver crystal-controlled at 75 MHz, with SmartMute audio muting.

  • Digital clearance recorder with playback, and Telligence voice command with voice feedback.

  • Supply 14 or 28 V DC; typical current 0.8 A at 14 V and 0.4 A at 28 V.

  • Unit weight 0.6 kg; 1.0 kg installed with rack, connectors and antenna.

Remote unit without its own controls

Remote unit without its own controls

The GMA 35c mounts behind the panel in its own unit rack, which attaches directly to a GTN 7XX unit rack. The rack is 159.8 mm wide and 37.6 mm high. All operation goes through a separate touchscreen controller over RS-232; Garmin names the GTN 7XX installation manual as the reference document for it.

A digital signal processor filters the audio and provides VOX control for the microphone inputs. The unit also has a speaker output for a cockpit speaker or passenger address, ICS volume controls for pilot, copilot and passengers, and separate muting thresholds for the inputs.

Inputs, intercom and fail-safe

The audio panel functions cover 3 transceiver inputs, 5 receiver inputs and 5 unswitched alert inputs, with 600 Ω input impedance. Three stereo headphone amplifiers serve pilot, copilot and passengers. Intercom modes include all intercom, isolate and pilot-copilot or pilot-passenger combinations, and passengers can toggle isolation remotely.

Two stereo music inputs and one telephone interface can be distributed to intercom positions independently of the intercom mode. A COM swap input and a PA mode are provided. With power off, a fail-safe connection routes the pilot PTT, pilot microphone and pilot headset-left to COM 1.

Bluetooth and telephone

The GMA 35c adds Bluetooth (A2DP, HFP) for streaming audio and making phone calls from smartphones and tablets. It also connects wirelessly to the VIRB XE, so no headset audio cable is needed for that camera. The GMA 35 without the c has no Bluetooth.

The Bluetooth antenna and cable kit 011-03909-00 is required for proper Bluetooth function. The antenna connects to the SMA connector at the front of the unit and should sit within reach of the rack, free of conducting obstructions toward the cabin positions where connection is wanted.

Included and supplied separately

P/N 010-00831-41 is the GMA 35c with unit 011-02299-40 and 010-00831-81 is the GMA 35c with unit 011-02299-80, each as the Standard version with the GMA 35 connector kit 011-02302-00. Unit-only versions exist as 010-00831-40 and 010-00831-80.

Install rack 011-02645-00, backplate 011-02300-00 and Bluetooth antenna and cable kit 011-03909-00 are supplied separately. The installer fabricates all system cables and supplies the headphone, microphone and 3.5 mm jacks; the marker beacon antenna mounts on a flat surface under the airframe.

Approval and installation path

Garmin lists TSO-C35d (Category A, marker beacon receiving equipment) and TSO-C139 (Class Ib, aircraft audio systems) for units 011-02299-40 and 011-02299-80. The installation manual is not a substitute for airframe-specific installation data.

A certified aircraft needs an approved modification and a Certificate of Release to Service after installation. Apart from regulatory periodic functional checks, maintenance of the GMA 35 is on condition only.
