Garmin GMU 11 is a remote-mounted three-axis magnetometer that measures the Earth's magnetic field and supplies magnetic heading data to a Garmin attitude and heading reference system. P/N 010-01788-01 is the certified version listed in Garmin's Part 23 AML STC installation data for the G5, GI 275 and G3X Touch; the experimental G3X version has P/N 010-01788-00.

A 9-pin circular connector carries CAN bus, RS-232 and two aircraft power inputs. With the G5, the GMU 11 provides heading over the CAN bus and is required when a G5 is installed as DG/HSI. With the GI 275 it communicates with the internal ADAHRS over RS-232 and is limited to Class I and II aircraft up to 6,000 lb take-off weight. In a certified G3X Touch system it works with the GSU 25D ADAHRS.

Garmin prefers mounting in the wing, away from electric motors, ferromagnetic material and electrical conductors; the unit must not be mounted on an access panel and is levelled within 3.0° in pitch and roll. A US AML STC is not automatic EASA approval: a certified aircraft needs an approved modification covering the type, such as an EASA STC or a validated STC, and a Certificate of Release to Service. Fit depends on the aircraft type and the Garmin display system.
